Luke completes epic 70-mile challenge

On Saturday 13 June 2026, Luke Ballard took on the formidable Rat Race – The Wall, an ultramarathon that follows the length of Hadrian's Wall from Carlisle to Gateshead in Newcastle. Covering more than 70 miles with significant climbs and a demanding 26-hour time limit, it is one of the UK's most iconic endurance events.

Luke was inspired to raise money to support In Jolly Good Company once again because of his family's experience of dementia, and we are incredibly grateful for his continued fundraising efforts.

Reflecting on the challenge, Luke said: "It was great fun, although there was much too much tarmac for me! I loved the big hilly trail sections – they were much more my cup of tea. The scenery was beautiful, especially between 36km and 50 km where the views were incredible."

The race proved every bit as tough as expected. After covering around 84km – the equivalent of two marathons – Luke began to feel the strain and adopted a run-walk strategy for the final half marathon. Despite the challenge, he pushed on to the finish, buoyed by the incredible support along the route.

"There were thousands of supporters," Luke said. "The North East hospitality was amazing."

The event held special significance for Luke and his family. The race weekend coincided with his mum's 70th birthday, and she travelled to Newcastle with Luke's partner Rachel and stepdaughter Jade to support him. They were there to cheer him across the finish line at Gateshead.

Luke explained: "It felt like one mile for every year for Mum."

The celebrations continued after the race, with family members from his nan's side who live in the area joining them to mark both his achievement and his mum's milestone birthday.

Around 2,500 runners entered Rat Race The Wall, with approximately 1,800 completing the course. We are delighted that Luke not only finished this remarkable challenge but also placed in the top 20% of the field.

Everyone at In Jolly Good Company would like to say a huge thank you to Luke for his dedication, determination and ongoing support. Taking on more than 70 miles of challenging terrain is an extraordinary achievement, and the funds he has raised will help us continue supporting people living with dementia and their families.

Congratulations, Luke – and thank you for going the extra mile for us once again. You deserved that bottle of beer at the end – we bet it tasted amazing!
